Films set in Greece: legends of the big screen

The brilliant sunlight of Greece adds a sparkle and intensity to everything it touches. No surprise then that so many iconic movies have been made here.

For Your Eyes Only

Steering clear of the more obvious white-houses-blue-skies backdrop, director John Glen shot some high adrenaline footage of 007 hang gliding around the unique hanging monasteries of Meteora near Zagoria.

Mamma Mia

This frothy, infectiously up-beat film is the most successful one ever to be shot in Greece. The island of Skopelos takes a starring role, in particular the wedding chapel Agios Ioannis in Castri.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

Required reading for anyone visiting the Ionian Islands in the 90s, this Louis de Bernières novel made its transition to the big screen in Kefalonia. The film used locations all over the island, in particular Antisamos beach and Fiskardo.

Zorba the Greek

An iconic movie starring Anthony Quinn as the eponymous Zorba, an exuberant Greek who takes a visiting Englishman under his wing to teach him about life and love. The movie was shot in Crete around Chania town, the Apokoronas region and the Akrotiri peninsula.

Who Pays the Ferryman

A TV show rather than a movie, this 1970’s classic was a gripping story of love, family and vendetta, with echoes of Greek mythology as the title hints at. The 8-episode series was filmed almost entirely around the village of Elounda in Crete.
