NEW FOR 2025

According to Greek mythology, the mighty Titans were the original rulers of Earth before the Olympians succeeded them, and it seems quite natural that any deity would choose a spot as splendid as this one to reside. Villa Kronos sits on the hillside near the entrance to Souda Bay, commanding wide views across its calm blue depths to the Akrotiri peninsula on the opposite side. It’s a tasteful blend of traditional materials and modern architecture, attractively finished in the fresh blues and brilliant whites that are the signature colours of Greece. A lot of thought has gone into the design, with the unusual inclusion of two single rooms as well as two doubles to make a very versatile layout for a family or a group of friends. High quality Coco-mat beds, bathrobes, optional pool heating and a hamam add a touch of hotel-style indulgence to your holiday, complemented by the seclusion that only a private villa can offer.

This area is a long-term favourite with Simpson Travellers, with a wealth of sites and activities within walking distance or a short drive. You can walk to the village of Plaka for a traditional taverna lunch in its pretty main square in about 15 minutes, and there are basic village shops here for essentials. About a kilometre further on is Almyrida, blessed with a gently shelving sandy beach, numerous watersports and a string of excellent restaurants for wonderful waterfront dining. Souda Bay is both scenically stunning and historically important, from the ancient theatre of Aptera looking out towards the White Mountains, to the well-preserved Ottoman fortress and the sombre Allied WWII cemetery. No holiday in western Crete would be complete without a visit to the old Venetian harbour town of Chania, one of the undisputed jewels of the island and easily accessible in about 40 minute by car.

Villa Kronos sits close to Villa Rhea. Both villas are entirely independent of one another, with their own pool and garden, but can be rented together to accommodate a larger party.

The soaring White Mountains, known in Greek as the Lefka Ori, are at the heart of West Crete’s dramatically beautiful landscape and the villages in their foothills offer traditional Cretan fare in glorious abundance – that’s if Chania’s twinkling harbour lights and waterfront dining don’t entice you first. Spring brings an abundance of flowers, turning hiking trails and gorges into welcome destinations for walkers, and in summer, the many beaches offer sun worshippers a choice of scenic locations to spread their towels.
