NEW FOR 2025

Pretty much all of Provence is enchanting, but if you’re looking for somewhere with all the charm and none of the crowds, may we suggest Maison de Lauris? Set just a few minutes’ walk from the village of the same name, this elegant house is perfect for one or two couples or a smaller family, complete with its own heated swimming pool, and two attractive en-suite bedrooms. A top-to-bottom renovation in 2023/24 has created a contemporary yet warmly welcoming home, finished with natural materials for laid-back comfort and easy summer living.

The first one up can stroll into the village for naughty-but-so-nice pains au chocolat and a still-warm baguette or two, all the more delicious served by the pool as you think about the day ahead. The mature gardens make this an enviably secluded spot to just dream the day away, roll a few boules or dine beneath the stars, and when you feel like eating out, Lauris offers everything from crepes and pizzas to fine French dining, all rather more affordable than the many famous towns clamouring for attention in the vicinity. After a day out exploring those guide-book highlights, it’s hard to imagine a more appealing and delightfully authentic spot to return to.

Local area

The village of Lauris sits on a rocky spur, with views over the Durance river, popular for kayaking or just strolling along its banks through timeless countryside. These are the landscapes that inspired Peter Mayle’s much-loved novel A Year in Provence, close to the jewels of Luberon Sud; Lourmarin (10min drive) and Ansouis (20min drive) are both on France’s celebrated ‘most beautiful villages’ list.

If you’ve come away to simply relax and recharge, Lauris village will supply all your daily needs and more within a short walk, and if you want to exert yourselves a little, there are numerous hiking, biking and horse-riding trails to discover locally. Taking a deeper dive into the region is also very easy: a 45min drive takes you to Aix-en-Provence - the birthplace of Cézanne - often called the Paris of the south thanks to its leafy squares, stately architecture and lively student buzz. Roughly an hour away are Roman Avignon and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and if a day at the coast is called for, you’ll find the Med at Carry-le-Rouet (75min drive) and Les Calanques at Cassis (90min drive).

There's no better way to while away leisurely holiday hours than by visiting the many Provençal villages with their cobbled streets and cafes. Hilltop towns glow in pale golden stone, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and fields of fragrant purple lavender. From celebrated Gordes to charming Eygalières, each town has a market to help you discover local produce, or treat yourself to a long lazy lunch; from pavement cafes to Michelin stars, the midday meal in France is nothing short of an art form.

The cities of Avignon, Orange, Nîmes and Arles offer an architecturally rich and cultural day out but try to make time for lesser-known gems like Vaison la Romaine, Uzès and Ile sur la Sorgue for a less crowded but equally impressive picture of the history of the region.

A day at the beach is always an option but you can find other open water options closer to home, from child-friendly paddling in the River Gardon below le Pont du Gard, to kayaking down La Sorgue as it winds its way through the Luberon. Close to Avignon, Lac de Monteux has a lifeguarded beach and various water activities for all ages.

This is a destination to rival any other. Complemented by our selection of handpicked villas we can help you make the most of your luxury holiday in Provence.
